HackDay Foundation

The HackDay Foundation, is a non-profit organization focused on organizing a series of International hackathons to promote startup development in select cities around the globe.

The first HackDay was organized in Miami, FL on November 2011, where 40 participants competed and created 10 exciting projects.  The second HackDay took place in Buenos Aires on May 12-13, 2012, inside the offices of MercadoLibre, where 40 hackers produced 17 really cool projects over a 24 hour period.

The next HackDay will take place again in Miami and it will substantially raise the bar from anything we have done before, and as a matter of fact, from any hackathon ever done anywhere else.  First of all, the Grand Prize will be a two part prize, for a total cash prize pf $50k, which will be provided by our platinum sponsors, The Knight Foundation and Tres Mares Group.  This will make HackDay Miami essentially the x-prize of hackathons.  Secondly, the winner will be able to participate in the HackDay Acceleration Program, which will dramatically increase their chances of making the dream of launching a startup a reality.

At the AVCC conference (avcc.fiu.edu) the week following the hackathon, a select group of top tier judges will select the HackDay winner from the five finalists of the hackathon, who will receive the $30,000 grand prize.  The criteria will be simple - which project has the best potential to become a successful technology startup.  Additionally, if the winning team commits to working on the project full-time for the next 90 days and participate in the HackDay Accelaration Program, they will receive an additional $20,000 cash prize, free co-working space at LAB Miami and priceless mentorship from some of the world’s top technology entrepreneurs.

The primary goal  behind the HackDay prize is that the winning team gets enough cash to dedicate itself to the project for the next 3 months and really attempt to turn the “hack” into a startup.  For this purpose, we created the “HackDay Acceleration Program”, where the winners will have the opportunity to work directly with our HackMasters, who will support them with strategic, technological and business advise to ensure they succeed in launching the startup.

HackDays are meant to be a celebration of the digital culture, and serve as an engine for startup creation within the local technology community.

HackDay Rules

All HackDay applicants must register for HackDay by going to http://hackday.co/registration.  After initial screening, applicants be required to complete a codility.com online programming test. Participants will be carefully selected based on their past experience and programming skills. A maximum of 60 participants will be selected to compete.

Hacks may not be under development prior to the HackDay.  Code libraries and APIs used to construct the solutions are acceptable, but project- specific logic must be created on-site.

All entries compete for the Grand Prize, but may only win in one “Special Challenge” category.

If a “Special Challenge” category  does not receive at least two qualifying entries, no prize may be awarded.  It will be at the sponsor’s discretion.

All HackDay applicants MUST complete applications for the event by 5:00PM on Saturday, Dec. 3rd, 2012.

The development tools, frameworks or application focus is entirely up to the participants.

Participants are expected to bring all the tools and software they will need to build their entry. The organizers will try to provide enough power strips, but you may bring your own to be on the safe side.

Rules are subject to change at the discretion of the coordinator.

What is the HackDay Foundation?

The HackDay Foundation, is a non-profit organization focused on organizing a series of International hackathons to promote startup development in select cities around the globe.

What differentiates HackDay from other hackathons?

  • Focuses of markets with less developed technology ecosystems
  • Not centered around one platform, sponsoring provider or service vertical
  • Encourages local and global companies to come together and physically represent their APIs at the event
  • Higher scores are awarded to “hacks” with local impact
  • Global network of HackMasters that act as mentors to winners

What is the hackathon?

A hackathon, a hacker neologism, is an event when programmers meet to do collaborative computer programming. Although “hack” is in the root of hackathon, hackathons have nothing to do with malicious “hacking” done by crackers, rather the spirit of a hackthon is to collaboratively build programs and applications.

Hackathons are typically between several days and a week in length. A hackathon refers not simply to one time hacks, but to a specific time when many people come together to hack on what they want to, how they want to - with little to no restrictions on direction or goal of the programming.
